Seu Jorge presents The Life Aquatic with the Athens State Orchestra

Brazilian songwriter and singer of samba, rock, soul and funk, Seu Jorge, and the Athens State Orchestra, perform a special tribute to David Bowie while recreating the set of The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou on stage. At the Great Lawn Stage, you will have the chance to listen to some of the greatest hits of Bowie in Portuguese, as performed in Wes Anderson's movie.

Seu Jorge is one of the most talented contemporary musicians and actors of Brazil. His film career as an actor and composer of soundtracks, as well as his participations in more than ten films, earned him a lot of publicity. However, his international fame came after The Life Aquatic. In his acclaimed role as Pelé dos
Santos, a singing sailor, Seu Jorge performed several of David Bowie’s songs in the film. But in a twist, he did it in Portuguese, accompanying himself simply on acoustic guitar.

Bowie himself had said about those songs: “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese, I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”
Born and raised in Brazil -in a region near Rio de Janeiro-, Seu Jorge left his home at the age of 19 and went homeless for a few years. His life changed dramatically when Paulo Moura, a famous clarinet player, discovered him at the audition of a musical play.

His eclectic music interests can also be found in a wide range of cover songs –beside Bowie, he’s also done imaginative interpretations of Leiber and Stoller’s “Don’t” (recorded by Elvis Presley), Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You”, Serge Gainsbourg’s “Chatterton,” Roy Ayers’ “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” as well as other artists.

Along the way, there have also been countless collaborations with some of the finest musicians of today including Beck, Talib Kweli, Jack Johnson, Damien Rice and Thievery Corporation.
