Pericles Kanaris

“A Greek identity with an international sound.” This is an apt description of the works of Pericles Kanaris, a prominent Greek musician who now lives in New York and is coming to the Summer Nostos Festival with an ensemble of legendary musicians. In 2007, the Metropolitan Museum commissioned him to curate its first Greek music compilation, entitled Music of Greece, which was released for the inauguration of the new halls devoted to Greek and Roman art. One year later, he created the Synolon music ensemble and changed the way Greek music was performed in Manhattan. The composition Project Innocence, originally written for film, had its world premiere at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

With lyrics by acclaimed Greek poet Manos Eleftheriou, Kanaris’s 2014 album Aoratos had its release marked by a concert at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. The Grammy Award-winning producer and sound engineer Neil Dorfsman, who has worked with the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and Dire Straits, said that from the outset he was intrigued by the idea of joining seemingly disparate elements to create emotional, completely original content.

Pericles Kanaris is a fifth-generation descendant of famous fighter in the Greek War of Independence and later prime minister of Greece Constantine Kanaris. Born in Athens, Pericles began studying the piano at an early age. He earned a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music where he studied vocals and composition, focusing on writing music for the cinema. He also has an M.Sc. in Communication from the University of Boston and a B.A. in Media Studies from the University of Kent in England.

Appearing on stage with Pericles Kanaris will be musicians with impressive experience. Guitarist Ben Butler has done studio recordings or appeared on stage with Sting, George Michael, Annie Lennox, Stevie Wonder, Suzanne Vega, Chris Botti, Jonathan Brooke, Paula Cole, Sheryl Crow, The East Village Opera Company, Burt Bacharach, Herbie Hancock. Gary Schreiner (accordion, harmonica, keyboard) is a composer and producer and has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Elton John, Sting, Rosanne Cash, Joan Osborne, Patti LaBelle, Pedrito Martinez, Yoko Ono, Phoebe Snow, Marvin Hamlisch, and Run-DMC. He has written music for dozens of well-known commercials, and his compositions have played on television shows such as the Oprah Winfrey Show, Martha Stewart, The X Files, and Chappelle’s Show. Richard Dhammond is a bassist big names in music pick first when going to the recording studio. He has played music in dozens of movies, commercials, and Grammy-winning albums. Peter Douskalis has worked on on- and off-Broadway productions, among them The Lion King, School of Rock, Dear Evan Hansen, and Desperate Measures. He has twice given a TEDx talk on multicultural music education. Drummer Giancarlo Detrizio has won numerous awards and his collaborations feature names such as legendary drummer John “JR” Robinson (who worked with Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Ben E. King, and Angelique Kidjo), film score composer Alan Silvestri, Motown legend Lamont Dozier, and Broadway star Billy Porter. Greek musicians Marina Kolovou (cello) and Dimtiris Reppas (bouzouki) will also participate in the show.
