Ernő Rubik comes to Greece for the first time and speedcubers reveal their secrets as part of Nostos University!

June 05 2019

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s (SNF) Summer Nostos Festival presents, for the second year in a row, Nostos University, which is dedicated this year to the concept of complexity. Through workshops, elaborate constructions, and competitions, Nostos University will teach and decipher, in the most spectacular way, how to play with complexity. The guest of honor of this series of events will be Ernő Rubik, the inventor of Rubik's Cube. In a rare public appearance, the famous professor of architecture and design will come to Greece for the first time to talk to the audience and take part in events starring his famous cube.

From Sunday, June 23rd to Tuesday, June 25th, Nostos University will host artists known for their ability to play with complex compositions and constructions. Bryan Berg and Lily Hevesh will be at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center’s Lighthouse where they will create original artworks that will be on display until June 28th. In special workshops, they will share the secrets of their creations with Summer Nostos Festival visitors. Bryan Berg, the internationally renowned card stacker, who has made countless playing card structures all over the world and holds two Guinness records, will create castles and buildings especially for Nostos University. Artist Nick Sayers, for whom science is a source of inspiration in everything he does, will bring his amazing spirograph and pantograph drawing machines made out of recycled and everyday materials, allowing the festival visitors to create beautiful patterns and clever drawings. Popular YouTuber Lily Hevesh, a professional domino artist, will create fanciful constructions using rows of domino tiles. On Sunday, June 23rd, a huge Rubik’s Cube mosaic will start to take shape. It will be completed over the course of several nights and form a dazzling backdrop to all of this year’s Nostos University events.

From Wednesday, June 26th to Saturday, June 29th, it’s the Speedcubers’ turn! Some of the fastest Rubik’s Cube solvers in the world –Erik Akkersdijk, Nora Christ, Philipp Weyer, Sebastian Weyer, Daniel Goodman and Ricky Meiler– will share their secrets and teach you an easy method for solving the cube. Depending on your level, the secrets will range from simple moves for beginners, to more complex algorithms for advanced cubers.

On Friday, June 28th, the inventor of the famous cube himself, Ernő Rubik, will be at the Lighthouse in a rare public appearance to talk with the audience, and a festive evening full of surprises involving complexity will follow! Forty-five years ago, Professor of Architecture and Design Ernő Rubik realized the need to familiarize his students with the concept of complexity. So he designed the famous cube, which at first seemed unsolvable, but then, and after causing excitement among some of the world’s greatest minds, became one of the most widespread puzzles of all time.

On Saturday, June 29th, the official World Cube Association (WCA) puzzle contest, Athens SNFestival Cubing 2019, will be held at the SNFCC*. 120 participants from all over the world will compete in various categories including solving the Cube with one hand or blindfolded! In the evening, the prizes will be awarded by the master himself, Ernő Rubik!

We are looking forward to seeing you at Nostos University again this year, where you’ll have the chance to see famous artists and speedcubers in action. And while they’re trying to solve mind-boggling puzzles, you can learn some of their secrets!
